How to Make Money Online Selling Digital Products (The Real Sequence, Not the Fantasy)

I get to laugh at a lot of online experts. They tell you everything can be done from your laptop, and then you catch them on a stage in Dubai, Australia, or South Africa the next week. If they can make it all online, why are they still flying around the world to sell from a stage?

I don’t think it happened for them either. Not really. Not until 2020 was everyone forced home, and the whole game changed.

I’ve been building wealth since 1996. I hit millionaire status in 1999. My first book didn’t come out until 2005; it was in stores in January 2006. Selling online, the way I teach it now, has only been my world for four or five years. I built the plane while flying it, same as you’re about to.

Here’s what nobody tells you about making money selling digital products online: the order matters more than the effort.

Why Posting and Praying Doesn’t Build a Business

The biggest mistake I watched people make from 2020 onward: treating social media like the whole strategy. Post on Facebook, Instagram, and X, and hope something happens.

Those followers aren’t yours. Unless they’re in a database you own, they’re one algorithm change away from disappearing. Get put in social media jail, your channel gets pulled, and you’re back to square one with nothing to show for the work.

I don’t get out of bed for a company without two engines running, and a database is one of them. We use a system called RMS (Rapid Marketing Systems) because it has an automated campaign builder. That’s the difference between broke folks chasing likes and business owners who own their list.

“Unless you put people in a database where you can monetize them, they’re just followers who can be eliminated.”

Build the Funnel Before You Build the Following

Every successful digital product business starts with a lead magnet, not a masterpiece. I offer free shipping and handling on my books all the time. I give away the first three chapters of The Millionaire Maker. I give away free tickets to my Millionaire Intensive.

That’s the entry point. From there, the funnel does its job: one offer leads to the next. If you sell one thing, sell six. I personally run supplemental income through CBD, cryptocurrency, affiliate products, and direct sales links, because if someone likes one thing you offer, they’re likely to buy another. People aren’t just buying a product from you. They’re following you as an influencer, and a real funnel gives them a next step.

In The Millionaire Maker’s Guide to Creating a Cash Machine for Life, I teach that your Cash Machine has to come from a skill set you already have, something you could use to generate revenue within a week if I dropped you anywhere in the country. Your digital funnel works the same way. Start with what you already know how to teach, package it in small chunks, and let the funnel carry the reader deeper.

Affiliate Marketing Was My First Business, Not My Last Resort

Before “affiliate marketing” was even a word, I was doing it. I was a master distributor for Rich Dad Poor Dad, teaching the Cashflow game and building my own database off someone else’s audience. I wasn’t selling my brand. I was living inside someone else’s successful enterprise and learning how the whole machine worked.

Reciprocal relationships built my career. I endorsed other experts; they endorsed me, and both of our lists grew. If you’re starting from zero, this is still one of the fastest paths to cash. Find people whose audience trusts them, add real value, and build the relationship in both directions.

Sequence Your Content, or You’ll Burn a Year on the Wrong Channel

You’re probably doing all the right things. You’re just doing them in the wrong order.

That line is at the center of everything I teach in The Millionaire Maker, and it applies directly to content. Too many of you want to start with YouTube. Don’t. YouTube search behavior is completely different from Google, Instagram, or TikTok, and it takes real content volume to succeed there. Most of you don’t have enough material yet, and you definitely don’t have enough for a book.

Here’s the order that actually works:

  1. Start with an interview podcast. Talk to other experts in your category. You’ll learn what everyone else is doing and start finding your own distinction.
  2. Move to a quick ebook. Small, fast, published on Amazon. Not a New York Times run. That level costs over half a million dollars and a dedicated team.
  3. Build short-form content. One-minute videos, Facebook posts, the small stuff that builds your reps.
  4. Then go to YouTube, once you have the content library and the format down.
  5. Write the big book last. It took me years to sharpen the distinction that became The Millionaire Maker, drawing on Think and Grow Rich, Bob Proctor’s work, and everything I learned in the Rich Dad Poor Dad world. The book was the result of the sequence, not the starting point.

Start Today

If you’re serious about selling digital products online, here’s where to put your energy this week:

  • Pick one lead magnet. A free chapter, a free ticket, a free download. Something small enough to give away and strong enough to start the relationship.
  • Set up a real database, not a follower count. If you don’t have a system yet, that’s the first tech decision you make, before you post another thing.
  • List three people in your category you could interview. That’s your content engine, and it costs you nothing but a conversation.
  • Identify one affiliate relationship you could build in the next 30 days with someone whose audience already trusts them and who might trust you back.

If you don’t have time to build all of this yourself, you need a team. I hired experts in nearly every platform category because the algorithms move too fast for one person to track alone. That’s not a weakness. That’s how you scale.

I built a group of 5,000 people in our Millionaires in Training community who were doing exactly this: testing offers, building databases, and learning the sequence in real time. I also teach the full framework, live, at the Millionaire Intensive, one day, 10 to 6 Pacific, where I walk you through the two engines every company needs and how to actually get your first offer live.
