3 Ways to Improve Your Search Engine Optimization

What comes up when you Google your business name?

Are you the first result? Are you even on the first page?

One of the most important parts of running your digital marketing today is search engine optimization, or SEO. If you apply the right strategies, you can unlock the power of the internet and connect with more potential customers.

I spoke with SEO expert Stephen Spencer, the author of The Art of SEO: Mastering Search Engine Optimization, about 3 ways businesses can leverage SEO to expand their reach and make more money.

1.  Write a blog for an external source.

Find a website to like The Huffington Post or Business 2 Community and get something published! An interview, a “list-icle” ... maybe you’ll even be able to get a column.

The key is to create great content that shows you are an authority in your field. Leave breadcrumbs that lead to your brand.

Now, most of these posts will be unpaid. This is where SEO comes in. When you write you blog/column, link back to your site and products. Then whoever shares the article is also sharing your link!

2.  Focus on organic traffic.

Paid traffic has its uses, but they should be target efforts. It shouldn’t be your long-term plan to get traffic to your site. That’s because once you stop paying, the traffic will stop coming.

Taking the time to create content will lead to more consistent and buildable traffic. If you have bad SEO strategies, like just squeezing in as many keywords as possible, you may even get dinged by search engines like Google.

3.  Don’t get fooled by BS!

For most business owners, SEO is something you have to hire out. But because SEO rules change so often, you need to make sure the person you're hiring is trustworthy and up-to-date on their knowledge.

If your SEO hire is using 3 or 4-year-old techniques, you’re going to be in big trouble.

The easiest way to protect yourself is to do your research. You don’t have to be an expert, just make sure you are asking the right questions. Maybe even throw in some trick questions just to weed out the snake oil salesmen. 😉
